Our learning – Spring 2019

We have started the term by completing the topic on ‘Crime and Punishment’. The children have been enjoying listening to Oliver Twist through a BBC radio programme. They have developed their reading comprehension skills and have produced some fabulous writing. Next we will be reading ‘Running Wild’ by Michael Morpurgo which is linked to our Geography theme for this term ‘Extreme Earth’. Within this topic, the children will learn about climate zones and natural phenomena such as: earthquakes, tsunamis and  volcanoes.

In Maths we started the New Year with ‘Algebra’ which was a great way to start 2019! We have now moved onto ‘Fractions’ and will be extending this learning to ‘Decimals and Percentages’ which utilises the skills they have acquired in multiplication and division work. It really helps to be able to quickly recall times tables facts!

English and Maths will be taught most days. This term we have Samba drums on Mondays. Mrs Tomlinson and Mrs Lloyd cover the class on Monday afternoons when they have RE and French. PE (tag rugby) will be on Thursdays until half term with Mr Hickman. It would be helpful for your child to have a carrier back to put their muddy trainers in!). After half term, I will be teaching netball to the class. We can be flexible with our timings – weather dependent! Children will need their PE kit in every day, including some jogging bottoms/thermals/zip up tops as we will be braving the outdoors!

Homework will continue to be set on a Monday and should be handed in on a Friday. Every week children will receive spelling homework, Mathletics (at least 1000 points) and reading. They may sometimes be asked to practise spelling and times tables on Spellzone and Times Tables Rockstars for which they have their own login and password.

Last term was so fantastic with the production of The Tempest. I’m looking forward to seeing the children learning even more this term.
