Roman Day!

Maple Class had an energetic and enjoyable day on Tuesday to start of our topic on the Romans. The children learnt a lot and were very enthusiastic about their experience.

First, the children explored the dramatic change in the lifestyle of the Romans following the arrival of the Roman legions, took a tour through a bath-house.

Then they played a game called Delta ( a Roman numeral maths based game). They had three stones which they had to flick onto the pyramid. They added up the numbers to find their score.

After break the children went back into the classroom to complete a Roman quiz. They had to read the information boards around the room carefully to find the answers. We all found this very interesting!

After that, the children learnt how to play another Roman game called Segedunum (Ludus). They played against a partner and took it in turns to move their counters. The aim of the game was to get their three counters in a straight line across the board.

In the afternoon, the children experienced a display of weapons and armour that was used. They had to listen to Latin words to follow the instructions in a drill.

Finally, the children experienced a great deal of excitement of the games arena with a gladiator show. All children took part with important roles from slaves through to the mighty Emperor.

Mrs Godwin, Maple Class and myself thoroughly enjoyed our day and learnt a lot about the Romans; ready to kick start our learning in class.
