Oak Class – Spring term

SCIENCE

This term we are learning about materials in our Science work. This will involve exploring the properties of a variety of materials. We will be experimenting to find out whether materials are insulators or conductors of heat and electricity. We will also be finding out whether materials can be dissolved and if heating/cooling causes changes that can be reversed.

TOPIC

Our main topic for the term is Geography based. We will be learning about different climate zones in North America – why they exist and what impact this has on the vegetation that grows there. Other areas of the curriculum such as Art and DT will be linked to this topic.

ENGLISH

We have started to read ‘The Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen. We have been using reading skills such as: retrieval, interpreting, inferring and explaining. This helps us to fully comprehend the text and justify our opinions through using the evidence in the book. Our writing will link to this as much as possible. However, we often link our written work to topic and our ‘Let’s Think’ sessions.

MATHS

We have already started the term by building on our fractions knowledge and linking them to decimals. Our other topics for the term are: percentages, algebra, converting measures, perimeter, area, volume and statistics.

HOMEWORK

The routine for homework will continue this term. Homework is given on Mondays through a slide on Google Classroom. Every child is allocated a list of words that focus on the spelling rule of the week. We also have personal words to learn which are from the Year 5/6 wordlist or equivalent depending on which list we are following.

PE

Planet Education are teaching us Tag Rugby each week. We can go to the lunch-time club if we want to. An after school tag rugby club for Year 5 and 6 is available after half term.

RE

The theme for RE this term is Community. This is taught discretely each week.
